This week we celebrated Chinese Language Week.
Room 14 was determined to learn how to greet each other in Chinese so we set out to achieve this by using the aid of a Chinese language video and learning a Chinese greeting song called 'Ni hao ge'.
We were also very privileged to have Carmen Fu - Alyssa's Mum, join us on zoom and share with us her knowledge and wisdom on the Chinese Language. We were fascinated to learn there are 4 Tones of Mandarin Chinese and although a word is spelled the same way (like the word 'ma'), the tone marks above the letter (as shown below in the diagram) actually change the tonal sound but more importantly the meaning of the word. Thank you Carmen for a great Zoom session on Chinese language.
We read an interesting Chinese book called 'The Warlord's Puzzle' and from this, we learned about an ancient Chinese puzzle known as a Tangram puzzle made up of 7 pieces. The idea is to rearrange the 7 pieces back to their former shape - a square. However, many tried and failed, instead people created lots of other objects like animals, etc. A young farm boy was the only one to solve the puzzle. Here are some of the wonderful shapes Room 14 created with their own Tangram puzzle.

A whole school competition set for Chinese Language week got our children all excited! They had to create or draw a picture of their Chinese zodiac sign. A huge prize was up for grabs (50 tokens to the winner's Fale) for the winner of each class. So Room 14 gladly took up the challenge. Here are some of their creations.
Room 14 also created some lovely Chinese Greetings Posters.

Carmen Fu also taught our Children how to make Chinese fans. Sharayah made Dragon puppets out of paper with her Mum.
Sharayah spent time in the kitchen with her Mum making yummy Bao Buns (steamed buns) for lunch.
Vanshika was captured on video making delicious dumplings with her Mum.
Room 14 thoroughly enjoyed another week of learning a new language and are now confident in greeting each other in Chinese. We leave you with this Chinese proverb;
Happy holidays everyone, Zai Jian.
