This week we celebrated Chinese Language Week.   Room 14 was determined to learn how to greet each other in Chinese so we set out to achieve this by using the aid of a Chinese language video and learning a Chinese greeting song called 'Ni hao ge'.   We were also very privileged to have Carmen Fu - Alyssa's Mum, join us on zoom and share with us her knowledge and wisdom on the Chinese Language.  We were fascinated to learn there are 4 Tones of Mandarin Chinese and although a word is spelled the same way (like the word 'ma'), the tone marks above the letter (as shown below in the diagram) actually change the tonal sound but more importantly the meaning of the word. Thank you Carmen for a great Zoom session on Chinese language. We read an interesting Chinese book called 'The Warlord's Puzzle' and from this, we learned about an ancient Chinese puzzle known as a Tangram puzzle made up of 7 pieces.  The idea is to rearrange the 7 pieces back to their former sh

Malo e Lelei!  This week we have celebrated Tongan Language Week by learning to greet each other in Tongan, sing a Tongan Welcome song, count to 20 in Tongan, listen to stories read in Tongan and then translated to English, and watch some beautiful videos on how to make Ngatu (Tongan Tapa).  We were also fortunate to watch a video on the beautiful humpback whales of Vava'u. Tonga is one of the few places in the world where you can still swim with whales. Room 14 managed to pause for a few photos during zoom class to capture the beautiful variety of Ngatu in our background.   On the count of 3, everyone say 'Cheese'! 1, 2, 3...
